	Designing with Dust is an outdoor installation featuring handmade bioplastic sheets and sawdust tiles. This “material library of dust” invites the public to explore diverse aesthetic possibilities for reimagining and revaluing construction waste. Visitors will also find a recipe book, enabling them to create their own biomaterial at home.&#38;nbsp;
Friends Making Work, together with students from Thammasat University, sourced waste materials from local suppliers to fill the library in the weeks leading up to the exhibition.&#38;nbsp;

To craft the library shelves, Friends Making Work collaborated with Bang Pho artisans who utilized local neem wood, finished in teak oil. The shelves feature dowel joinery and are fully demountable. After the exhbition, the library will be moved to a new location at Thammasat Design School.
Sited at Goddess Chao Mae Thapthim Shrine in Bangkok’s historic wooden furniture-making district, Bang Pho, the exhibition is part of the city-wide Bangkok Design Week, the largest design festival in Southeast Asia. BKKDW presents more than 400 design and creativity programs from more than 2,000 participants with over 400,000 Thai and international visitors each year.

D.E.P.O.T. / Gross Domestic Practice turns to the built environment as a site of material exchange. We examine salvage practices that revalue urban refuse and we conduct our own material experiments.

Construction has long been known as a growth industry, where material expenditure is geared towards ever greater Gross Domestic Product (GDP). We offer another definition: gross domestic practices (gdp), a total-practice approach that recognizes building maintenance, waste work, ecoservices, and the material limits of growth.

gdp stands for a post-extraction world where product is not the key economic driver, but rather, local processes that support the continual unmaking and remaking of the built environment.

An accompanying salvage film collects and arranges archival films, newsreels, industrials, education films, verité style footage shot on our own site visits and related ephemera. The film tracks a story of material value from early procurement and manufacturing to the waste crisis, ruined landscapes, and the warehousing of materials.The collected research, salvage materials and film were exhibited at the Rhode Island School of Design.

	 Planetary Home Improvement: From Just in Time to Geological TimeExhibited at VI PER Gallery

	This research exhibition and its resulting ephemera springs from an&#38;nbsp; interest in the geological provenance of common building material and material economies that seemed to scale up endlessly from what we tend to think is&#38;nbsp;a settled geological past. Home Improvement—not unlike geology’s fluvial, faulting, aeolian processes—is an aspirational, never quite there, perpetual future state. Does improvement end? Is there such a state as improved?

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The home improvement store is a geological site on demand. Rockwool, Sheetrock, Quikrete. Materials are processed into products, packaged, stacked, and sold across global DIY supply-chains, from Home Depot to Bauhaus and OBI. Basalt, gypsum, limestone. Material economies are severed from mineral entanglements with millennia of rock, fossil, plant, and stone. It takes 1 day to install drywall; it takes 299 million years to form gypsum.

	Three Days at 50 Morton Street Salon for Architecture, Narrative and PreservationJune 12-14, 2019
Co-curator: Amelyn Ng360 Documentation: Brad Kimbrough

	Architects, muscicians, writers and actors were invited to occupy a west village studio apartment for one week and create work responding to the space, its recently departed tenant and the building’s history.

&#60;img width="1632" height="1224" width_o="1632" height_o="1224" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/27c689bc0e2d5c6b980f2be6077799528f1f9bd3824d9e2ede0bd25bd2a92b8e/SALON_BEFORE_0058.jpg" data-mid="219211846" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/27c689bc0e2d5c6b980f2be6077799528f1f9bd3824d9e2ede0bd25bd2a92b8e/SALON_BEFORE_0058.jpg" /&#62;

In the fall of 1956, Elliot began renting on small studio on Morton St in New York City’s West Village. He lived there alone and, unlike the rest of the townhouse, the unit’s interior went unchanged – his 63-year hermetic occupancy preserved the lime plaster, parquet floors and cast iron sinks. Now, the apartment is being prepared for renovation &#38;nbsp;and will soon be integrated with the duplex below. &#38;nbsp; Occupying a one week latency – between the studio’s vacant-but-not-quite-empty state and the Department of Building’s approval of demolition permits – Christine Giorgio and Amelyn Ng acquired access and invited several architects, musicians, writers and actors to create work responding to the space, its recently departed tenant and the building’s history.Over three days in June, the studio apartment was occupied once more to trace, commemorate and document this pre-demolition moment in time.

OffsettedArthur Ross Architecture Gallery
New York, NYFebruaary 21-June 8, 2019
Exhibition Design: Cooking Sections
Curated by Irene Sunwoo, Curator of the Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery and GSAPP Director of Exhibitions, with Tiffany Lambert, GSAPP Assistant Director of Exhibitions.
Installation photography: James Ewing

	Offsetted was an exhibition conceived and designed by London-based spatial practitioners Cooking Sections (Daniel Fernández Pascual &#38;amp; Alon Schwabe). The immersive installation, comprising matter from New York City trees, assembled a collection of narratives about the political and economic interests that have both protected and displaced the city’s trees under the pressures of urbanization.
For the exhibition, I fabricated a 1:1 replica of a concrete form that had been cast into the rotted hollow of a tulip tree.

The COVE HOUSE is a single family home situated on Morris Cove in Sag Harbor, NY. The lot sits on a gentle slope and is bound to the west by Morris Cove and to the east by Bluff Point Road. The clients want a volume with expansive views, largely oriented toward the water and southern exposures, while maintaining intimate coves around the outdoor gathering areas.

COVE HOUSE proposes a two story home with four bedrooms and four baths on the upper level. The kitchen and living room are on the ground floor, in addition to a room with a flexible program. The plans also include a detached garage and a swimming pool.

Site &#38;amp; Context

The neighborhood is comprised of mostly summer homes. The surrounding houses vary in both size and style--some dating back to the 19th century.&#38;nbsp; A handful of cottages and ranch homes built between the 1950’s and 1970’s remain, however many have been renovated or completely rebuilt by new owners. Notable historic homes include the 1953 cottage once occupied by writer John Steinbeck and the 1850’s home built for a captain at 20 John St.

The clients requested a modern-style house with large glass expanses for taking in the views and the light and for creating seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces. The designers looked to the region’s construction and design history, from the 20th century through the modern era, to develop a vernacular design, responsive to both Hamptons style and local ecology.

Site &#38;amp; Ecology

Because the site is located within the wetland jurisdiction, it requires a naturally vegetated upland buffer. These buffers play a critical role in the protection of adjoining wetlands and bodies of water. The buffer region contains some notable features such as a large Eastern Red Cedar,&#38;nbsp; Cherry Trees, and bayburry bush ground cover.

In support of the existing ecosystems, the new construction designates a naturally vegetated passage to the bay for wildlife on the north side of the property.

	This project is the first to utliize hempcrete in a New York City brownstone. Hempcrete is a bio-composite material that stores more carbon than it emits during its production and implementation, making it carbon negative.

The project--improving the thermal performance of the top floor apartment in an historic brownstone--presented an opportunity to work with natural materials. The existing condition was a brick wall, long stripped of its original plaster finish, and a timber ceiling.&#38;nbsp;Incompatible materials in historic buildings can result in moisture problems and material degradation. Modern materials also have a high carbon impact. For these reasons, I looked to hemp for its vapor open and super insulating properties. Hempcrete is a biogenic composite material made from the chopped up woody part of the hemp plant and mixed with a lime-based binder. It can be cast into a timber frame on site, or pre-cast blocks can be used to form walls. Hempwool is a fire-rated batt insualtion.&#60;img width="5712" height="4284" width_o="5712" height_o="4284" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8f305aceac319ca385fb255bd52488b22c09f08fcb7032af4f7f67281ebb2a96/hemp-workshop_04.jpg" data-mid="237562482" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8f305aceac319ca385fb255bd52488b22c09f08fcb7032af4f7f67281ebb2a96/hemp-workshop_04.jpg" /&#62;In order to minimize turnarond time between tenants, pre-cast&#38;nbsp; blocks were sourced, instead of a cast-in-place approach. The blocks were set with lime mortar and the wall was finished with two coats of lime plaster. &#38;nbsp;A workshop ran concurrent with the installation so that other architects could gain hands-on experience with the materials. Massachusetts-based Hemptsone LLC led the workshop and installation.&#38;nbsp;For the ceiling insulation, exposed joists provided about 8” of depth. Half of this space was given over to 3.5” hempwool batt insulation. T&#38;amp;G pine provides the finish on the underside. The new wood was stained to match the existing timbersTo complete the upgrade, electircal service was added to the ceiling cavity in front of the hemp wall and three pendant globes were installed.

		<description>Vitra Clinic
	Interior ArchitectureHuntington, NY

&#38;nbsp;
	Vitra is a modern cosmetic clinic on Long Island serving up non-surgical aesthetics. For their new flagship location, I designed 3,000 sq ft of interior space to accommodate six procedure rooms, a photo studio, reception and waiting areas, office and staff spaces, and a generous client lounge.

	&#60;img width="800" height="1200" width_o="800" height_o="1200" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b83ea8c3940946e8353a43c8b873da249a972b23ce64c1a361380a54f6307de1/vitra-lounge-lamp.jpg" data-mid="225573422" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/800/i/b83ea8c3940946e8353a43c8b873da249a972b23ce64c1a361380a54f6307de1/vitra-lounge-lamp.jpg" /&#62;
	&#60;img width="1036" height="1556" width_o="1036" height_o="1556" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/bda9a54c63b2831b250948bcd8b20a57bb8e1aea994e13a506b81f1c4c3f2258/vitra-vignette_lobby-axo.png" data-mid="225572836" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/bda9a54c63b2831b250948bcd8b20a57bb8e1aea994e13a506b81f1c4c3f2258/vitra-vignette_lobby-axo.png" /&#62;

The entry sequence was carefully considered, with the reception desk greeting clients upon arrival in a sunlit corner of the building. A curved wall behind the desk directs clients down a hall, lined with cloud-like pendants, toward the lounge. The other side of the curved wall forms the backdrop of the photo studio.&#38;nbsp;
	&#60;img width="800" height="1200" width_o="800" height_o="1200" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/1a23e976c69093a6e520bf98d3136388ebc3d1a6d8728d21130e2baf219a9a1a/vitra-exterior-day.jpg" data-mid="225573423" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/800/i/1a23e976c69093a6e520bf98d3136388ebc3d1a6d8728d21130e2baf219a9a1a/vitra-exterior-day.jpg" /&#62;
	&#60;img width="800" height="1200" width_o="800" height_o="1200" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a8cf230c40fb5451c0b85bee1387429dd358119ab537118253da05b1e7ee4fa9/vitra-lounge-day.jpg" data-mid="225573425" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/800/i/a8cf230c40fb5451c0b85bee1387429dd358119ab537118253da05b1e7ee4fa9/vitra-lounge-day.jpg" /&#62;

Finish and fixture selections favor smooth, sleek and rigid materials, such as chrome, glass, acrylic and stone. While wood doors, LVT floors and lighting bring the warm glow.

	&#60;img width="800" height="1200" width_o="800" height_o="1200" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/ffd12e8305855b4b2252da630dc35eaa78c3cc823fdcad3c459bd2d17a67be3d/vitra-lounge-elevation.jpg" data-mid="225573469" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/800/i/ffd12e8305855b4b2252da630dc35eaa78c3cc823fdcad3c459bd2d17a67be3d/vitra-lounge-elevation.jpg" /&#62;

The lounge is a luxe space for client consulations, events and group appointments. A careful selection of texture and pattern adds to the custom, luxurious feel of this space. Gauzy curtains filter sunlight during the day and a warm glow illuminates the room at night for a showy scene when viewed from the exterior or through the interior glass partition.
